Schweickert to pitch at D II Lewis University

Lainie Schweickert just felt Lewis University was right for her.

The senior pitcher on the St. Bede Academy softball team signed her National Letter on Intent Monday to play college softball for the Division II school located in Romeoville.

“It wasn’t too big or too small. It’s just in between at a D-II,” Schweickert said. “It was a good fit. I really liked the coaches and connected with them.”

Schweickert decided on Lewis over the summer and picked the school over Illinois-Springfield and Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

“I looked at some D-I schools, but a lot of them already had their roster filled and I got a late start on recruiting,” Schweickert said. “D-II just seemed to be a good fit. D-I I think would’ve been too much because I want to focus on school work.”

Last season, Schweickert was fourth in the area with an 18-6 record and had an area-leading 1.24 ERA for the Lady Bruins. She also was second in the area with 231 strikeouts.

At the plate, she hit .329 as Schweickert was named NewsTribune All-Area First-Team as a pitcher for the second straight season.

“It’s a big relief that I don’t have to work about anything anymore,” Schweickert said. “Now I can just focus on pitching next season.”
