Bolingbrook 67, Ottawa 33 The Lady Pirates tried to keep pace with the Raiders early but were unable to stay with Bolingbrook, which has advanced to the state tournament seven times in the last eight years and won state titles in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Ottawa struggled on offense against the Bolingbrook defense, which held the Lady Pirates to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters and helped Ottawa commit 19 turnovers, including 12 in the first half.
“In the 20 years that I’ve coached, that’s one of the best in-your-face defenses that I’ve seen,” Ottawa coach Mike Cooper said. “They were even more in our faces than Morton was last year in the sectional. They contest every pass, and it was just hard work trying to get decent shots.”
Ottawa’s Catie Carlson made two free throws just 24 seconds into Tuesday’s game to give the Lady Pirates a 2-0 lead.
It was the only advantage Ottawa held all night as the Raiders led 23-8 after the first quarter, 38-16 at half and 56-27 after three quarters.
Junior guard Cassidy Rice and senior guard Lindsey Greene both scored a team-high nine points for Ottawa (1-1), while Greene grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Jalessa Kindred added five points and four rebounds.
“I thought we played a lot better (against Bolingbrook) than we played (Monday) night (against Streator),” Cooper said. “You look at the score and think, ‘What’s he talking about?’ but to a person, we all agreed that we played much better as far as intensity. We didn’t shoot it as well, but I thought we got after it pretty good.”
