Jessica Suarez recorded team highs of 36 kills, 44 points and six aces Saturday to help the La Salle-Peru volleyball team to a second-place finish at the Dixon Invitational.
The Lady Cavaliers went 3-0 in pool play with wins over Auburn (20-10, 20-5), Rock Falls (20-17, 22-20) and Dunlap (20-14, 17-20, 15-4).
In the semifinals, L-P beat Rochelle 20-12, 20-10 to set up a another meeting with Sterling in the title match.
The Lady Cavs lost to the Golden Warriors for the third time this season in a hard-fought match. Suarez had 12 kills as L-P fell 20-25, 25-20, 25-20.
For the tournament, Heather Senica had a team-best eight blocks along with 22 kills and 42 points, Sarah Shevlin led the team with 49 digs and Brittany Zawacki added a team-leading 54 assists. Zawacki also had 36 points and 17 digs for L-P (20-5).
Fieldcrest’s Maria Baldwin ran an 18:29 Saturday to place second at the Prairie Central Invitational and help the Knights to a second-place finish.
Baldwin finished nine seconds behind Midwest Central’s Cassie Mundekis. Fieldcrest scored 90 points to finish behind Seneca (69).
Annette Baldwin (19:56) and Caitlin Pongracz (20:46) also earned medals by placing 10th and 23rd, respectively.
In the boys race, Fieldcrest’s Levi Schmillen (16:50) and Brandon Pongracz (17:16) earned medals by finishing 15th and 22nd, respectively.
The Knights did not have enough runners for a team score.
Sterling Newman 49, Hall 14
Landon Piccatto ran for a touchdown and returned a punt for a touchdown Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Red Devils to their first win of the season in a Big Rivers Conference game in Sterling.
Down 14-0 in the first half, Newman fumbled on a punt and Hall recovered. Piccatto helped the Red Devils (0-7) capitalize with a 40-yard touchdown run. He finished with 93 yards on 17 carries.
Piccatto returned a punt 59 yards for a score in the second half.
Ottawa sophomores Bailey Bradish and Mariah Cavanaugh won the No. 2 doubles bracket Saturday at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Tournament.
The Lady Pirate pair beat La Salle-Peru’s Emma Lipka and Katie Wellner, who were undefeated in conference play during the regular season, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals.
In the title match, Bradish and Cavanaugh won 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
The Lady Pirates also received a third-place finish from Molly Angell and Kayla Guenther at No. 1 doubles.
Ottawa placed second in the West Division in the tournament and in the overall season standings.
