Police searching for suspects in window shooting spree

Jeff Dankert
NewsTribune Reporter

La Salle and Peru detectives continue to search for suspects in the shooting of windows on cars and buildings with pellet or BB guns overnight Tuesday, Peru police chief Doug Bernabei said today.

Police are looking for security video that might have recorded something and for recent records of pellet gun and ammo sales.

About 30 formal reports of broken windows have been compiled, he said.

“Reports trickled in throughout the day (Tuesday) in Peru and La Salle,” Bernabei said. “But there is damage out there that a formal report has not been filed with police. We don’t know how many incidents there are but it’s going to approach the 50 mark. I know there are more out there. As people turn to their insurance companies, they’re going to want to document it.”

There is no financial estimate of damage, Bernabei said.

“It’s going to be substantial,” he said, adding that one double-paned storefront window and boarding could reach $2,000.

The vandalism appears to have stopped short of Oglesby despite initial reports suggesting Oglesby businesses were targeted.
