Work was scheduled to begin today on frozen water lines around La Salle, Mayor Jeff Grove said at the city council meeting Tuesday.
Grove said the city had received 24 reports in the past week from residents without water because of freezing of the water lines outside homes. The reports came from all over the city, indicating no single problem area, Alderman John Duncan III said.
Sixth Street resident Dan Mathieson said he will have been without water for a week as of today.
“You don’t realize how much you use water until you don’t have it,” Mathieson told the council.
The city’s plan is to use a vactor machine to jet stream hot water into the water line at the site of each affected residence. This method had been tried in Ottawa and recommended to public works director Jeff Bumgarner, Grove said, adding that the work should not disrupt traffic.
“We should hopefully have everybody thawed out by the weekend,” Bumgarner said, though he cautioned he couldn’t guarantee that.
Grove reminded everyone to keep a small stream of water running in their buildings to fight pipe freezing.
