Boom, boom, boom: Baby, here's your fireworks (update)

Looking for a professional fireworks display or Fourth of July blowout?

There are plenty of venues and dates from which to choose in North Central Illinois. Some including bands, beer gardens and huge crowds each year. Others are just all about the rockets’ red glare.

City of Peru (updated)
Peru has postponed its fireworks show to Aug. 31 because of danger posted by the rising Illinois River and lack of a dry launch site (see related story below).

About 5,000 people visited Hennepin last year during all-day festivities ranging from a bags tournament to a car show and pancake breakfast. This year’s celebration also includes 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. re-enactment of a murder case tried in Metamora by Abraham Lincoln. That takes place as part of the Putnam County Courthouse’s 175th anniversary. (A preview of Hennepin’s celebration appears in a related story below.)

Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the fireworks at Mendota’s Tri-County Fairgrounds. A concession stand will be available along with 3-D glasses and glow necklaces. Beer garden, live music, 7-11 p.m.

Fireworks Friday on the riverfront cap off four days of activities ranging from a carnival all week, bluegrass music at 7 p.m. Wednesday, a fish fry and beer garden Thursday at the American Legion Hall, a beer garden opening at 1 p.m. Friday at the American Legion hall and a parade at 2 p.m. Friday at Central Park.

Viewing can be done from the high school stadium bleachers all the way to the bluffs along the Illinois and Fox rivers either on shore, or in a boat.

Every Saturday night in July the lodge will have a fireworks display and live entertainment.

City of Streator

Fireworks on Saturday take place on the fourth in a five-day celebration. Saturday’s activities includes a carnival on Hickory Street and many activities before the approximately 9:30 p.m. fireworks at the Streator High School athletic field, including the Red, White, Blue and YOU Talent Show Finals sponsored by FM-99.3 WAJK at 7:30 p.m.; Just for Kix Dance presentation at 9:15 p.m.

The Village of North Utica will celebrate Independence Day with a fireworks display at dusk Sunday, July 6.
The village board in May approved $1,500 to expand the Fourth of July celebration and make it more family-friendly. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include two bounce houses-moonwalks as well as face painting for children.
