'Walk, Run, Bike' event to support Red Cross
It won’t be too late to participate in the American Red Cross “Walk, Run, Bike” event even if you show up that day.
Sarah Stasik, branch manager of the Illinois Valley chapter of the Red Cross in Peru, said new teams are welcome to sign up on the spot, and individuals are also welcome. The event will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Baker Lake in Peru, with registration beginning at noon.
“It’s going to be a hot day, so we’ll have plenty of hydration available,” Stasik said.
There will be a picnic with bratwurst, ice cream and other donated food, she said. T-shirts will be available for a minimum donation of $10.
Last year, the event raised about $27,000; this year’s goal is $30,000.
“We’re always working on disaster response; it seems like there’s always something going on,” Stasik said. For younger children, there will be a “bike rodeo” noon-2 p.m. Kids will get a passport to be stamped at different educational stations teaching them about bicycle safety.
“They need to know the rules of the road; they need to have proper safety equipment,” Stasik said.
Red Cross workers assisted with the recent tornado in Earlville.
“Our role then was mainly helping with bulk distribution, feeding, water and cleaning supplies,” Stasik said.
