I&M Canal Corridor has big plans for 30th anniversary

NT Staff

OTTAWA — To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Canal Corridor Association has planned a caravan weekend for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24.

The caravan will begin in Lemont and make stops in Lockport, Joliet, Wilmington, Morris, Seneca and Ottawa before culminating Aug. 24 in La Salle.

Events in Ottawa will be short guided tours of Washington Park, Reddick Mansion and the Ottawa Tollhouse at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 24. The caravan will end in La Salle with lunch at 12:45 p.m. at Lock 16 Visitor Center, a La Salle Canal Boat ride at 2 p.m., cake at 3 p.m. at Lock 14 and a mini tour of the Hegeler Carus Mansion at 4 p.m.

Visitors can take photos (no flash) at the desk where President Ronald Reagan signed the legislation designating the corridor as the first National Heritage Area on Aug. 24, 1984. The desk is at the La Salle County Historical Society museum at 101 E. Canal St., Utica. The museum will be open Sunday, Aug. 24, from noon to 6 p.m.

All events except for the meals are free, but registration is requested. Participants may register for any combination of events.
