Zoning hurdle cleared for potential development in Mendota

Tamara Abbey
Mendota Bureau Chief

MENDOTA — The first step toward development on the former Mendota Community Hospital property was approved during the city council meeting Monday night.

Aldermen approved subdividing a portion of the property into two lots. The hospital still owns the property but intends to sell it for retail development. The property reverted to residential zoning after the hospital razed the old building. Aldermen subsequently approved rezoning the property to business use.

No immediate plans for the property were disclosed during the meeting.

Facade grant approved
Façade work on a law office at 812 Washington St. was approved. The $7,000 grant will come from Tax Increment Financing district funds.

The overall project is estimated to cost more than $30,000.

The council approved two new positions in the public works department. The new positions, one full-time and one part-time, were created when the city’s wastewater superintendent retired. Aldermen also approved an additional stipend for the city’s new water, wastewater superintendent. The jobs were recently combined by the city.
