Water, sewer departments reorganized in Mendota

Tamara Abbey
Mendota Bureau Chief

MENDOTA — The city of Mendota began reorganizing the public utility departments following action taken during the regular council meeting Monday night.

Jon Kaufman retired recently, which led to combining the water and wastewater departments as one department. Tim Kimrey will supervise the new combined department, and Toby Fitzgerald was promoted to waste water lead.

Kimrey was supervisor of the water department prior to accepting the new position. The council also promoted Mark Grinka from part-time to full-time for public works at large.

Alderman Bill Hunt then told the council to expect a discussion on proposed increases in the sewer and water rates at the next meeting.

Supporting Relay for Life: Mayor David Boelk declared July 11 as Upper Illinois Valley Relay for Life Day. Organizers are asking residents to welcome relay participants and show support for the fight against cancer by decorating homes and businesses in purple ribbons, banners and wearing purple on Friday. The Upper Illinois Valley Relay starts Saturday evening at Lake Mendota.

Squad car deal: Aldermen approved the purchase of a new squad car at a cost of $22,347.

Late summer street projects: Bids for the street maintenance and resurfacing program will be opened Aug. 1. Plaza Drive road work bids should be ready for opening in mid-August and work completed later this year said city engineer Ed King.

Christian revival: Aldermen also approved the use of Veterans Park downtown for a Christian revival 5-8 p.m. July 21-27 sponsored by the Mendota Ministerial Committee.

5K Color Me Run: The Aaron Olsen 5K Color Me Run on Sept. 14 also was approved at Lake Mendota park.
