To avoid any confusion: Yes: La Salle County Board chairman Jerry Hicks (D-Marseilles) will face a challenger in the November election. No: The challenge is not for his county board chairman seat.

Monday is the last day for La Salle County Board candidates to contest write-in petitions to run for office. These petitions are typically filed on behalf of the county’s Republican or Democratic parties to avoid having candidates from the opposite party run unopposed for a seat.

In recent years, this has yielded only one or two candidates per election cycle. But this year there are six filings, and one of them, Republican Ernest “Mike” Weiss, has petitioned to run for Hicks’ District 22 seat.

This is the first challenge for Hicks’ county board seat since he was elected at-large as the chairman of the county board.

The new races also pit two challengers for the vacant District 26 seat representing the city of Streator. Republican Gerald Lanning will face Democrat Scott Orbin. The seat was left vacant by former board member Ron Dittmer (D-Streator) and neither party ran a candidate in the primary election.

The other two seats in the Streator area also will have contested races. Longtime incumbent Democrat Bob Jakupcak will face Republican Norman Sedlock, and incumbent Republican Walter Roach Jr. will face Dan Riordan.
