DePue mayor gets help lobbying in Washington DC

Kim Shute
Bureau County Reporter

DePue village president Eric Bryant and Nancy Loeb, director of Northwestern’s Environmental Advocacy Center, along with a team of Northwestern scientists recently traveled to Washington, D.C. in an effort to lobby the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to adopt a new standard set by the Centers for Disease Control for acceptable blood lead levels in children.

The new standard of 5 micrograms of lead per deciliter cuts the previous recommended level by 50 percent.

Bryant said the trip went well; the group met with U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) as well as a group from the EPA.

“We were able to stand up and present our point of view to get their support,” Bryant said. If the new standard is adopted by the EPA, it will make requirements more stringent for remediation of soil affected by the now defunct New Jersey Zinc smelter site and Mobil phosphate fertilizer plant.

Bryant said he hopes the change will be quickly approved because it is not a new policy but an amendment to an existing one.
