Peru boot shop cocaine convict may get shorter sentence

Tom Collins
NewsTribune Senior Reporter

OTTAWA — The man who ran a cocaine ring from a Peru boot shop faces a new sentencing hearing May 30, at which time he’ll argue for less than the 16 years he drew in 2012.

Alejandro Arteaga, 37, formerly of Spring Valley, is back in La Salle County after a partial reversal by an appellate court. He remains convicted of cocaine-related felonies from Bureau and La Salle counties, but justices remanded him to Ottawa to correct a pair of procedural errors at his sentencing hearing.

Arteaga was convicted two years ago of running a cocaine ring from a western wear/boot shop located near Peru City Hall. He was sentenced to 16 years for his La Salle County crimes, to be served on top of the 5 years he drew from a separate drug bust in Bureau County.

On appeal, Arteaga didn’t challenge any of the evidence or the resulting conviction, only the prison sentence from La Salle County. (The Bureau County conviction and sentence were not appealed.) He was remanded to Ottawa on March 20 for new proceedings.

Arteaga remains convicted and will be deported to Mexico after he’s released from prison. Attorneys previously said Arteaga is in no danger of drawing more than 16 years when he reappears before Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr.
