Street-legal golf carts, ATV permission wanted in Tonica

TONICA — A few Tonica residents, including Jim Payne, attended the Tonica Village Board meeting Monday to request the board consider making golf carts and side-by-side ATVs legal to drive on village streets.

The board decided to have a meeting of the police committee to get more information on how that has worked out for other communities. That meeting will be on Monday, May 12 at Tonica Village Hall. The time is to be determined.

Sewer treatment plant construction starting soon
The village of Tonica is swiftly approaching the construction phase of its new sewer treatment plant. The Environmental Protection Agency has approved the design for the plant, which the village was required to build or face severe fines from the EPA.

There will be a public hearing before next month’s regular board meeting to allow residents to ask questions or submit comments on two potential sources of funding for the project: An EPA loan for about $2.5 million (at an interest rate of 1.9 percent) and a Community Development Assistance Program grant the village plans to apply for soon. If granted, the CDAP funds would require the village to provide matching funds in the amount of 25 percent of the grant.

The hearing on the CDAP grant application will be 6-6:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, followed by the hearing on the EPA loan 6:30-7 p.m. and the regular board meeting at 7 p.m. at Tonica Village Hall.
