MENDOTA — The Mendota Fire Department launched the “Keeping the Wreath Red” campaign recently to remind residents of the extra fire prevention and safety efforts that need to be taken during the holiday season.

A wreath with red lights was placed at the fire station, 610 Main St., Mendota that will remain until Jan. 5.

Any holiday-related incident such as a fire caused by holiday decorations or an injury due to a holiday-related accident will result in replacing a red bulb with a white bulb.

The wreath then serves as a reminder to residents to take extra safety precautions during the holiday season.

Mendota fire chief Dennis Rutishauser notes there is an increased danger of fires during the holiday season.

Candles displayed in the home, at parties and during religious ceremonies are prevalent during the season, but careless use can cause serious injuries and fires.

The addition of wreaths, trees and extra combustibles contributes to the speed and size of winter fires.

Dry air in homes and the use of auxiliary heating sources also contributes to the rise in fire deaths during the winter months.
