Local Rotarians keep up worldwide fight against polio

NT Staff

La Salle Rotary, Putnam County Rotary, Illinois Valley Sunrise - Peru, and Peru Rotary issued a reminder to the Illinois Valley that today is World Polio Day.

To learn more about Rotary efforts, watch “World Polio Day: Making History,” a livestream event presented by  Rotary and Northwestern University’s Center for Global Health beginning at 5:30 p.m. today at http://www.endpolio.org

In 1979, Rotary became involved in polio eradication with a five-year commitment to provide and help deliver the polio vaccine to 6 million children in the Philippines. In the next four years, similar five-year commitments were provided for Haiti, Bolivia, Morocco, Sierra Leone, and Cambodia. This led to Rotary making a historic commitment in 1985 to immunize all the world’s children against polio.
Working in partnership with non-governmental organizations and national governments, Rotary became the largest private-sector contributor to the global polio eradication campaign. Rotary is dedicated to ending polio in our lifetimes. We have preserved this fight since 1979 and have now helped eradicate polio in all but three countries worldwide.
