Smoke shop owner indicted

OTTAWA — The owner of a Peru smoke shop was indicted Tuesday on charges he sold illegal synthetic cannabis.

A La Salle County grand jury convened Tuesday and returned a two-count indictment against Abdel J. Rahman, 45, of 17415 Tamar Lane, Tinley Park.

Rahman could face 3-7 years in prison if convicted of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, both Class 2 felonies. He remains held on $1 million bond. He will appear Thursday for arraignment.

Rahman was charged following a search warrant executed Sept. 10 at Peru Smoke Shop, from which police seized not only purported synthetic cannabis but a “large amount of cash” and other evidence being analyzed.
Peru police chief Doug Bernabei said the first count was filed in connection with Tuesday’s raid; the second count alleges that Rahman sold synthetic cannabis to an undercover agent on Sept. 3 in the smoke shop.

Prosecutors subsequently revealed the substance in question was “Extreme Kush,” a product containing XLR-11, one of numerous compounds known to produce euphoric effects similar to cannabis.
