OTTAWA — Federal Emergency Management Agency officials are extending the disaster relief application deadline for La Salle County residents affected by floodwater.

La Salle County Emergency Management Agency director Connie Brooks made the announcement Tuesday during the county board’s Public Safety II committee meeting.
The deadline, which was scheduled to expire yesterday, will be extended until July 24.

Brooks also said emergency officials are in the beginning stages of coordinating a long-term recovery group to assess and meet the needs of people that FEMA cannot help.

“FEMA doesn’t make people whole, so many are without things like housing, clothing and furniture,” Brooks said.

“What we intend to do is set up a group to assess those needs and find ways to help them.”

More than 800 people in La Salle County have applied for federal disaster relief after floodwaters devastated areas along local rivers and creeks in April.
