The March for Babies kickoff helped generate interest for the walk scheduled on April 28.
Kenneth McCoy and his wife Kirsty came to the event with $3,257 donations already collected for the organization. Kenneth said he started participating in March for Babies because his brother was born premature and knows other families in the same situation.
“It gives people something to hope for,” said Kenneth adding that people need that these days.
The McCoys started collecting in January of last year. Kirsty said they even held car washes to raise money for T-shirts for their events.
Peggy Cain, Heartland Division of Illinois Director for the March of Dimes, said the goal for this year’s event is to raise $200,000.
The purpose of the kickoff was to generate awareness of the event and give teams an opportunity to sign up and collect supplies. Teams also could sign up online allowing electronic e-mails and Facebook messages to be sent to friends and family members about donating to teams. Cain said people could go to www.marchforbabies.org or www.marchofdimes.com for more information.

Concert for Babies follows March for Babies
March for Babies also was named charity of choice for the Concert for a Cause this year, which will have Tim McGraw performing. Cain said the kickoff was held at Lou’s LaGrotto because of the support the owners have given the organization over the years.
The 2013 River Valley March for Babies will be Sunday, April 28 at Illinois Valley Y, Peru, with registration at noon and the 3.1-mile walk at 1 p.m.
