Multiple crashes on Illinois River bridges

Craig Sterrett
News Editor

Multiple crashes after ice formed on bridge decks made it difficult to cross the Illinois River for some commuters this morning.

At 6 a.m., police had flares out to close Route 251 north of the Illinois River for northbound traffic, and police also blocked entrance ramps from U.S. 6 to Route 251 south because of accidents on and south of the bridge. Tow trucks were on their way.

At least three vehicles were reported as damaged on the Route 251 bridge. At 6:28 a.m., police and tow trucks were preparing to clear the scene at 251 while also requesting more road salt.

Meanwhile, police scanner traffic indicated officers already on the scene of multiple accidents on the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Bridge over the Illinois River, before 6 a.m. were reporting “several more” after 6:10 this morning. La Salle County deputies were assisting state and other police on the Interstate 39 bridge.

As of 6:40 a.m., traffic was moving slowly southbound on the icy Interstate 39 bridge, but a long line of traffic could be seen behind emergency vehicles in the northbound lanes of the Lincoln Bridge.

AM-1220 WLPO reported the first of the ice-related accidents on bridges occurred on the Shippingsport Bridge that carries Route 351 over the river between La Salle and Oglesby.
