A. Charles Mueller, 88, of Peru and founder of Mueller Funeral Homes died Thursday morning. He resided the past 10 months at Manor Court, Peru. Charles Mueller began the funeral service in 1950 at 909 Pike St. It branched out to other area cities and today remains owned and operated by his family. Businessman Bill Schulte of Granville grew up with Mueller’s family in Peru and served with him in Peru Rotary Club for about 20 years. “I knew him my entire life,” Schulte said. “I went to school with several of his children. Just a wonderful family, wonderful father, husband and pillar of the community. He was always very kind and very thoughtful and had a brilliant sense of humor.” Friends recounted Mueller’s military service. He served with the Army Air Corps in World War II and the Air Force in the Korean War. He first met his longtime wife, Jean, in grade school in Earlville. Peru alderman and businessman Bob Ankiewicz knew Mueller through business activity and membership in Fish’N Fun Lake south of Hennepin, he said. “He was a very level-headed, easy-going man who was a friend to everyone,” Ankiewicz said. “There was no one he wouldn’t talk to or say ‘hi’ to on any given day.” The Rev. Harold Datzman, O.S.B., pastor at St Joseph Catholic Church in Peru, taught Mueller’s children at St. Bede Academy. Through the church and funeral business, Datzman grew his friendship with Mueller. “Chuck was a very fine man and very well-known in the funeral business and he was very gracious,” Datzman said. “That’s why he had a very strong business.”
