MENDOTA - Rusty Stachlewitz, along with the Mendota Area Y board of directors, unveiled plans for the new building during Monday night’s regular city council meeting.

Members of the board expect to close on the former B & M Motorsports dealership on Route 251 south of Mendota by March 15. Stachlewitz said the building should be open to members in the summer. The Mendota Y will be managed by the Illinois Valley YMCA in Peru. Members will get access to both facilities.

Stachlewitz said there are no current plans to offer a separate Mendota-only membership. He said the plans are to eventually include an indoor walking track and offered to work with the city on an outdoor path later.

“There’s an old railroad bed that runs behind there,” he said. “We could improve that and make a walking path.”

Additional information will be available 5-8 p.m. Monday, March 11 during a dinner at El Zarape. The event is also planned as a fundraiser.

. Len Trovero Construction was the lowest of four bidders for a bridge deck reconstruction project on East Fourth Road near Del Monte. The bid of $113,070.40 will be formally considered at the next council meeting on March 18. Alderman Paul Norris said the city is still exploring state funding for the project.

. Mendota Fire chief Dennis Rutishauser reminded residents with fire hydrants in their front yard to keep them cleared during heavy snowfall such as the one expected Tudesday.

. Several tag days for the corner of Main and Meriden streets were approved. Relay for Life teams along with a “Walk to Defeat ALS” group will be fundraising at the intersection on April 20, May 11 and May 25.
