Government grant telemarketing scam alive and well in Illinois Valley

NT Staff

A Peru resident reported to police that he received a cell phone call that he believed was a scam.

According to the police report, the resident received a phone call from a person who sounded of Indian origin from area code 202, Washington, D.C. The caller said he represented the federal government and the government had a surplus of money. Because the Peru resident pays taxes on time, the resident allegedly was entitled to $8,500.

The caller then asked the resident for a checking or savings account number or a debit card number. The resident refused and reported it to police, according to the report.

Federal Trade Commission recognizes this as the “government grant telemarketing scam,” which alleges a reward of grant money and asks for financial account information. Authorities warn people to not provide personal identification or financial information to suspicious solicitors.

The National Do Not Call Registry provides an opportunity to limit telemarketing calls. Once you register your phone number, telemarketers covered by the telemarketing sales rule have up to 31 days from the date you register to stop calling you. You can register for free by calling toll-free (888) 382-1222 from the number you wish to register.
