County emergency management agency to move into former Steelworkers hall

HENNEPIN — Putnam County has entered into a proposed agreement to purchase the former steelworkers union hall to use as an emergency services building, the Putnam County Board announced Tuesday.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a very good fit (for us),” county emergency management agency coordinator Jim Goldasich said.

The building, plus approximately six acres, will be purchased with a grant for $85,000. Title work is underway. Goldasich said a little remodeling inside will be necessary. In addition, a garage will have to be built for storage of equipment, he said.

The building will be used for meetings, training and as a warming and cooling center when needed, board chairman Duane Calbow said.

“We all wish it was still being used for its original purpose,” Calbow said.
Even though it is no longer being used for the steelworkers, its history will be honored, Calbow said.

“The legacy of the building will be kept,” agreed Goldasich.

I am thinking was this a good decision on the County Boards part. What will all of this cost us. He this been considered. Upkeep on the building heating and cooling cost, building maintenance, insurance costs. Where does all of this money going to come from? Seems to me the County Board is very free with our money,
