Ballots too big in Bureau, Putnam and 23 other counties

CHICAGO (AP) — Election officials say nearly a quarter of Illinois counties and the city of Aurora are reporting that some primary ballots are too large and don’t fit into scanning machines, and that included Bureau and Putnam counties.
Putnam County Clerk Dan Kuhn said four of Putnam County's eight precincts had ballots that were to wide for machines.
"It's the first time it's ever happened," Kuhn said.
One Putnam County precinct worked around the problem by using a touch screen, and in the other three precincts, election judges trimmed ballots so they would fit.
"They didn't really complain too much and said 'we'll get it done,'" Kuhn said.
Rupert Borgsmiller of the Illinois State Board of Elections says all votes will be counted, but tallying may go slower than usual in affected counties.
He says ballots from two vendors are causing problems in 25 counties. But not all precincts in those counties are affected. Some ballots are fine, even in the affected precincts.
In Bureau County, clerk Kami Hieronymus said Democratic ballots were trimmed incorrectly. She said the problem was caught quickly and judges trimmed them before giving them to voters.
Counties reporting ballot size problems are: Winnebago, Vermilion, Iroquois, Douglas, Knox, Grundy, McLean, Warren, Lee, Bond, Bureau, Christian, Clark, Coles, DeWitt, DuPage, Edgar, Macon, Macoupin, McDonough, Moultrie, Putnam, Rock Island, Shelby and Tazewell.
