Don't move firewood: Tree-killing pest keeps spreading

The Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Already present and chewing on trees in La Salle, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall and Lee counties, the emerald ash borer continues to spread and has been confirmed in two more counties.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture says the destructive emerald ash borer has been found in Peoria and Tazewell counties.

In Peoria County, they were found near Dunlap and Peoria. In Tazewell County, state officials found them in Minier using surveillance traps.

Agriculture officials say it was a “significant” find because the beetles were outside the boundaries of the state quarantine set up to prevent the spread.

The Illinois quarantine includes 49 counties; among those are all of the counties in the NewsTribune coverage area.

The quarantine prohibits transport of firewood across county lines, although best practices would be to burn firewood near where the tree was felled.

The emerald ash borer is a metallic-green beetle.

Its larvae tunnel into ash tree bark.

That causes the trees to starve and eventually die.
