Archery, music event to benefit St. Jude Runners
An event today and two events Saturday in Spring Valley should bring in thousands of dollars for the La Salle-Peru St. Jude Runners.
Most years, runners on the La Salle-Peru team, which will run from Peru Mall to Peoria next Saturday, have to solicit all of their own pledges, with each of the 30-50 runners trying to raise a minimum of $750.
This year, the local organization has been receiving support from Wal-Mart Distribution Center, which has been providing volunteers for events such as a car wash at the St. Margaret’s clinic in Peru, an event at Buffalo Wild Wings and, today and Saturday, an event including food, beverages, music, archery contests and more at Time on the Water Outdoors on Route 89 on the south side of Spring Valley.
Time on the Water Outdoors and the distribution center are donating all proceeds from this weekend’s event to the local St. Jude runners, said Lori Guerrini, La Salle-Peru team organizer.
“We had mentioned it last year as something we could do to make more money for the St. Jude Runners, and Darrell (Stiennen, archery range and bow sales manager at the Spring Valley business) said that’s a great idea and he jumped all over it. That’s the big sponsor is Time On the Waters’ Big Buck Archery,” said Lou Guerrini, longtime support driver for the La Salle-Peru St. Jude Runners.
Lori Guerrini said the Wal-Mart distribution center is providing food, water, soda and a disc jockey, and requires employees to volunteer. Today’s event has workers from the warehouse’s weekday shifts, and Saturday’s will have weekend shift workers, Stiennen said.
“They’ve been supporting us for a number of years, just from the amount of runners they’ve been supplying,” Lou Guerrini added.
“This is a biggie,” Lori added. “This is probably the biggest fundraiser we’ve had.”
St. Jude Runners will have a tag day donation drive Saturday at Spring Valley City Bank, the supermarket in Spring Valley and possibly two Peru retailers.
But the big events are all day Saturday at Time on the Water Outdoors, where Stiennen will conduct an indoor 3D archery tournament, an outdoor pop-up target shoot and a 100-yard target.
People who hit the bulls-eye from 100 yards can get into a drawing.
Separately, longtime angler and former News-Tribune outdoor writer “Flic” Sobkowiak was having a “hoarder’s sale” of much of the fishing gear and many crankbaits he has accumulated over the years. He said he will give half of what he makes to the runners.
