Harry Baldridge of eastern La Salle still is struggling to repair his roof, which was blown off during the storm while he was inside.

Though no one was injured, Baldridge is at a loss without homeowner’s insurance. With the help of his neighbors, he covered his house with a tarp and repaired part of a damaged wall, but there’s not much else he can do.

“I’m living in my garage right now, but I don’t know how long that’s going to last,” he said, adding that he had regained power on his first floor, but not his upper floor. “As soon as that tarp’s gone, I’ll have to move out of here.”

Baldridge’s daily life now revolves around finding cost estimates for roof replacement and cleaning up the property.

“A lot of the inside I’m going to end up doing myself or get some neighbors to help me, but I have to get a roof on, or I’m out of luck.”

Baldridge said this week he already had filled two dumpsters and was on track to filling a third with pieces of destroyed roof and wall. He also had to have a partially uprooted tree cut down because it was at risk of falling.

“You see it on the news all the time, but I never figured it would happen to me,” he said. “My mistake for not having insurance. I’ve got every other kind of insurance — car insurance, life insurance, health insurance, but not homeowner insurance. All I can do is keep plugging away at it and hope for the best.”
