Bishop Daniel R. Jenky decreed in April that St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church would combine parishes, according to the Rev. Tom Mizeur. The move didn’t come as a surprise — it had been long been discussed before the bishop’s decree, Mizeur said. The first official date of the change was July 1.
Although both buildings will retain their names, the new name for the parish is St. John XXIII, Mizeur said.
As part of the change, Sunday Masses have ceased at St. Joseph’s — although the building will still be used for funerals, marriages and baptisms, Mizeur said.
