La Salle woman killed in I-39 crash
An 83-year-old La Salle woman died after a traffic accident Saturday night that involved four vehicles, according to Marshall County Coroner Dave Lenz.
Nancy Hylla of 101 Ninth St., the driver of a 1993 red Buick, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police. There were no passengers in her car.
The report said Hylla’s car was traveling south on Interstate 39 near Rutland, when the vehicle drove through the median and struck head-on a 2004 silver Pontiac driven by Robert Limke, 44, of Rockton. Limke was transported via Life Flight to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Limke was in fair condition Monday morning.
A 13-year-old boy in Limke’s car was transported to St. Francis via ambulance. He was in fair condition this morning.
After striking Limke’s car, Hylla’s car continued south and struck at 2007 black Chevrolet driven by Richard Scoles, 62, of Streator, who was traveling north with passenger Sally Scoles, 61, of Streator.
Witnesses stated Hylla had been driving erratic, including driving without headlights prior to crossing the median, the police report said.
A 2002 black Ford SUV, driven by Danny Clifford, 66, of Batavia, was also driving northbound with passenger Deborah Clifford, 57, of Batavia, and attempted to take evasive maneuvers to avoid colliding with the other vehicles, the police report said. Clifford drove into the median, resulting in his SUV rolling over.
Richard and Sally Scoles and Danny and Deborah Clifford were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Streator. St. Mary’s Hospital does not provide condition reports.
Interstate 39 was closed southbound for a short period of time, according to the police report. Northbound traffic was closed until approximately 3 a.m. while the crash was investigated.
The crash remains under investigation.
