Federal Bills
S. 1410 and H.R. 3382 — The Smarter Sentencing Act reduces 5-, 10-, and 20-year mandatory minimum sentences to 2, 5 and 10 years, respectively, for certain drug offenses. Also gives judges more leeway when sentencing people who do not pose a public safety risk. S. 1410 filed July 31, 2013, by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). H.R. 3382 filed Oct. 20, 2013, by U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador (D-Idaho).

S. 2001 — Federal agencies must obtain uniforms and badges that are manufactured in the United States. S. 2001 filed Feb. 6, 2014, by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

State Bills
Senate Bill 2658 — Cities can use motor fuel taxes to remove trees infected with Dutch elm or emerald ash borer. Filed Jan. 21, 2014, by Sen. Michael Connelly (R-Wheaton). Passed the Senate 49-0 on April 1.

House Bill 4245 — Requires courts to release first-time, non-violent offenders on their own recognizance. Filed Jan. 21 by Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago). Defeated April 4 in the House 33-73. Rep. Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley) voted no.

Senate Bill 3149 — Diabetics can’t be charged with indecent exposure for injecting insulin in public. Filed Feb. 11, 2014, by Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago). Passed the Senate 54-0 on April 1.
