Firefighters break through a rear bay door Wednesday at Mobil 1 Lube Express, Third and Chartres streets, La Salle. A fire and explosion inside the shop created profuse smoke. NewsTribune photo/Jeff Dankert
An explosion and fire Wednesday in a La Salle automotive lube shop created a lot of smoke and closed down traffic for two hours on U.S. 6, but no one was injured.
The fire started just before 1 p.m. at Mobil 1 Lube Express at Third and Chartres streets. The shop owner, Mark Brozovich, said he was inside working on the fuel pump of his pickup when something beneath the truck caught fire and exploded. Brozovich and another man inside the shop were shaken but not injured.
Peru and La Salle firefighters broke open bay doors to extinguish the fire and snuff the profuse smoke. The smoke cleared by 1:40 p.m. Traffic coming from both directions on U.S. 6 was rerouted until 3 p.m.
No one was injured, La Salle fire Capt. Dean Tieman confirmed.
At 2:40 p.m., a Utica fire crew arrived, sirens wailing, but this was for a reported car fire a block away. The car fire was out by the time crews arrived, a La Salle police officer at the scene said.
