Oglesby burglar dodges prison

Tom Collins
NewsTribune Senior Reporter

OTTAWA — Anthony Lance had a juvenile record but no criminal history as an adult. That kept him out of prison Friday, though just barely.

Lance, 20, of 1106 E. Walnut St., Oglesby caught a break when his sentencing judge rejected a call for 4 years in prison for breaking into two Utica garages and stealing seven guns. Instead, he was sentenced to drug treatment plus probation for the maximum 5 years.

Lance had entered a blind plea Nov. 15 to aggravated possession of stolen firearms and burglary. He was eligible for up to 15 years and prosecutors would not agree to cap their request for prison time.

Fortunately for Lance, it was his first adult felony conviction and Illinois law provides for probation for most first-time offenders. Judge Cynthia M. Raccuglia ordered supervised drug treatment, 227 days in jail (time served) plus 60 months’ reporting probation.

Utica police developed Lance and 18-year-old Austin McAdams as suspects in the disappearance of the guns, several of which were recovered in the trunk of Lance’s car.

McAdams recently entered a blind plea and will be sentenced Feb. 28. Prosecutors are not seeking prison time for him.
