Playing a few hands in memory of dad

The Duttlinger brothers, natives of La Salle, play euchre on the Little Vermilion riverbanks in honor of their father, Sid, who died Jan. 12 at age 85. After seeing to their dad’s arrangements, brothers (from left) Dan, 58, Neal, 56, Jon, 53, Jim, 60, Alan, 55, set up a card table to play and reminisce about their father and their many happy hours at the riverside. “It was part of the healing process and if (dad) knew we were out there, he’d think it was great,” Jim said.Submitted photos

Did you happen to spot a few brave souls playing cards by the side of the Little Vermilion River — in the cold and sleet?

It was the Duttlinger brothers, natives of La Salle, who set up the card table Jan. 16 and dealt a few hands of euchre in honor of their late dad, Sid.

“It was a great day,” recalled Sid’s oldest son, Jim Duttlinger, 60, of La Salle. “I think we were out there five hours.”

“I know,” he added laughingly. “We’re crazy.”

Sidney Duttlinger passed away Jan. 12 and his services were completed three days later with Mass at St. Hyacinth Church. The 85-year-old father of five was laid to rest at St. Hyacinth Cemetery.

The next day, the Duttlinger brothers spontaneously decided to remember their dad over euchre, Sid’s favorite pastime. After bundling up against the cold and freezing rain, they set up a card table and shared fond memories of the many hours they and their dad spent at the riverside.

“It was the greatest time for all five of us, talking about our dad and all the fun things we’ve done,” Jim said. “It was part of the healing process and if he knew we were out there, he’d think it was great.”

Jim actually had proposed a brothers card game in previous years but the Duttlingers are scattered between Illinois and Oregon and had never had the occasion to sit down as a family until this month. Jim proposed making the cards game an annual event celebrated in memory of their father.

“We’d talked about it for years, but it never worked out,” Jim said. “Our father’s passing made it possible and we were able to do it.”
