The Christmas spirit will officially descend in downtown La Salle on Saturday with the La Salle Promotional and Advisory Committee’s “Miracle on First Street” celebration.

This year, improvements have been made to Santa’s House at First and Wright streets, where the NewsTribune will take portraits with Santa.

“We’ve tried to make it a more Christmas-like atmosphere for pictures,” said Laura Frizol, director of the La Salle Business Association and head of the goal 1 (downtown) committee for La Salle Mapping.

She explained that the city of La Salle did work on the sidewalk; the mapping group and LBA helped with the landscaping; and businesses and volunteers donated the flowerbox, shutters, door, carpeting, fireplace and interior furnishings.

“It’s going to be wonderful,” Frizol said. “I think kids will have a wonderful time with all the activities.”

Another addition this year, according to alderman Jerry Reynolds, is the inclusion of Christmas Care donation boxes as part of the event.

Organized by area churches, the Christmas Care program’s goal is to provide a new toy for Christmas for each child who attends school (up to fifth grade) in the La Salle-Peru area and who is part of a free or reduced-price lunch program, according to christmascare.org.

Donation boxes will be at Santa’s Workshop, Lock 16 Café, Hegeler Carus Mansion and city hall.

It is the fifth year the city has celebrated Christmas with “Miracle on First Street,” Reynolds said, and every year, more people participate.

“We have a good group of volunteers,” Reynolds said. “Everybody puts forth some effort, and that’s what makes it work.”
