MENDOTA — The annual “Christmas Around the Square” returns to Mendota noon-2 p.m. Saturday. Shops will be decorated and stocked with holiday gifts during this kick-off for the season.

Santa will listen to Christmas wishes at his house in the First State Bank parking lot on Washington Street. Parents are welcome to bring cameras to take photos. The Mendota Optimist Club will serve hot dogs and hot chocolate. Scouts will have holiday decorations and treats for sale.

Other activities include horse-drawn carriage rides from the NewsTribune parking lot. The Kiwanis Club will have its annual pecan sale in Veterans Park.

Local churches will present “A Day in Bethlehem” at Veterans Park. The marketplace will include crafts, food and a live nativity. Abigail Women’s Clinic, 728 Main St., will have an open house 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with cookies and drinks available.

Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce, sponsors of “Christmas Around the Square,” will kick off the “Shop Local” promotion on Saturday. The promotion is a contest that runs through Dec. 31. For every $20 spent at participating businesses, a sticker will be placed on the Shop Local card. The cards can then be turned in at the chamber office by Jan. 2 for prizes. Qualifying cards must have stickers from at least three different businesses.

The grand prize will be drawn Jan. 3 and will consist of gift certificates and prizes from participating businesses. Additional prize baskets will be given away at that time.
