Taxpayers to pay more to IVCC

Property taxpayers are going to pay more to Illinois Valley Community College next year.

IVCC board members Tuesday approved their 2013 tentative tax levy Tuesday during their regular board meeting.

Board member David Mallery was the only “no” vote. Board chairman Melissa Olivero was absent.

“When I look at the core responsibility of the college we do great things here,” Mallery said. “But with high unemployment and people losing their homes I can’t support a levy with an increase in the tax rate.”

The tax rate will tick up 3.6 percent to .3663 from .3536 per $100 of equalized assessed valuation.

College business office officials stated the increase isn’t due to additional spending, but in a 2.5 percent decrease in property values throughout the district.

“I would say the only community colleges in the state that won’t be raising their tax rates will be in the collar counties because they’re property values aren’t in decline,” said board member Larry Huffman. “We’re not asking for more and more it’s a reflection on the EAV dropping in our area.”
