La Salle County committee not ready for security system contract

NT Staff

OTTAWA — La Salle County has two companies bidding to retrofit the jail’s security system, and the bids are $200,000 apart.

But six-figure savings weren’t enough to get a La Salle County Board committee to choose a bidder at a committee meeting Tuesday. Committee members opened divergent bids from Midco ($527,000) and Seico Security ($316,196, including warranty) and then promptly vanished into closed session.

When they emerged an hour later, tight-lipped authorities voted unanimously to table the issue until Nov. 21. By that time, attorneys for the board will have scrutinized the detailed bid packages and, presumably, have a recommendation.

What’s the holdup? At issue seems to be security details within the bid packages that authorities are understandably reluctant to disclose.

When asked about the need, sheriff Tom Templeton said technical support no longer is available in case of a breakdown, and that a new service provider is needed soon.
“The system has reached an end-of-life situation,” Templeton said.
