Ottawa High to replace cafeteria roof

Tom Collins
Staff Writer

OTTAWA — The Ottawa High cafeteria will get a new cafeteria roof and more efficient hot water in 2014, while the school’s Love Gym will have its fluorescent lighting replaced.
The board of education voted 7-0 Monday to let superintendent Matt Winchester seek bids and, where possible, state grants to make the school less leaky and more energy-efficient.
Job No. 1 is the roof of the cafeteria. Winchester said the roof exceeded its 10-year life expectancy by seven years and counting but the district needs to start thinking replacement.
“The leaks have become much more troublesome,” he said. “We’ve gone from buckets to garbage cans.”
Next is replacing the cafeteria’s water boiler with a 95-percent efficient instantaneous water heating system (estimated cost: $30,000) and replacing the fluorescent lights in the gym with LED lights ($39,000).
While those are big-ticket jobs, Winchester said the energy savings could justify the outlays in as few as two years.

In other matters, the board:
* Approved the retirement of Ed Frankenberger, career and technical education teacher, effective at the end of the 2017-18 school year
* Granted maternity leave to special education teacher Sarah Heuser and a maternity leave extension (two more weeks) to special ed teacher Holly Hall.
* Named winter volunteer coaches Ryan Gunderson, Brett Lockas and Brent Anderson for boys basketball and Mark Gretzinger for wrestling
