Cops chase down counterfeit bill passers

Two men from Chicago were charged with passing counterfeit money last week at Wal-Mart in Peru, and more charges are likely, according to Peru police.

Mark H. Johnson, 55, of 811 E. 46th St., Chicago and Dani M. Toure, 47, of 402 N. St Louis Ave., Chicago were charged with forgery and for obstructing justice (giving false names).

At 11:15 a.m. Wednesday police received a call of counterfeit bills passed at the store. Police obtained descriptions of the suspects and a vehicle from store surveillance video, said Dennis Hocking, Peru police detective.

At 8:54 p.m. Friday police again were called to Wal-Mart on a report of one of the suspects trying to pass fake money. Toure ran out of the building, throwing money in the air, got into a vehicle driven by Johnson and left the store. Police stopped the vehicle less than half a mile away at the Shell convenience station, Hocking said.
Johnson also was charged with reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and was picked up on three warrants, according to a report.

There were two other people in the vehicle, which was impounded. Police recovered $10 and $20 bills and other evidence. More charges are pending. The investigation continues with involvement of Ottawa police and Secret Service, Hocking said.
