PRINCETON — Simon Cordery, history department chairman at Western Illinois University, will speak at the Bureau County Historical Society’s annual dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Underground Inn, 219 S. Sixth St. in Princeton.

“A History of Illinois Railroads” will be the theme of Cordery’s presentation.

He will discuss the expansion of the railroad industry and how Illinois fits into the pattern of national railroad development. Cordery also will discuss Bureau County’s place in the history of Illinois railroads.

BCHS director Pam Lange said Cordery’s program delves back to railroad growth in the early 1800s. After attending a prior program of his, Lange said she knew she had to bring Cordery to Bureau County.

“We want to invite everyone to come out and hear about the railroads as they have been very important in our history,” Lange said. “It’s neat to see how they fit into the national picture.”
