La Salle Council buys leaf vacuum in split vote

La Salle residents will have a new leaf vacuum to haul away their leaves this season.

The city council on Tuesday voted 5-3 to approve the purchase of a $63,700 machine for picking up leaves.

Jeff Bumgarner, interim superintendent of public works, said the city’s current leaf trailer frequently needs repairs.

Alderman Tom Ptak said the city should wait until saving up enough funds to make the purchase, instead of borrowing money to buy it.

“We should be in the driver’s seat and not in the passenger’s seat when we purchase something,” Ptak said, noting that the city might be able to get a lower price for a leaf vacuum during the summer, when demand is lower.

“It’s a crapshoot,” Bumgarner said of the current vacuum, but added that it might last another leaf-gathering season.

“One of these years, it’s going to break,” Alderman Jim Bacidore said. “What are we going to do then?”

Aldermen Bacidore, James Demes, Jerry Reynolds, T. “Boo” Herndon and Mark Schneider voted to approve the purchase. Aldermen Ptak, John “Doc” Lavieri and John S. Duncan voted against the approval.

In August 2012, the council ended months of debate on the topic by voting 6-2 in favor of banning the burning of leaves within city limits with the exception of areas zoned for agriculture. Permits to burn are available in special circumstances.

The leaf gathering in the fall is one of the few direct benefits many in the city of La Salle are recipients of. Thank you so much aldermen Bacidore, James Demes, Jerry Reynolds, T. “Boo” Herndon and Mark Schneider.

The question is, why didn't the 3 who voted to not purchase, bring this up for a vote in the summer and proffer a "better deal?"

Wisdom, smart planning, and foresight for ALL residents is needed here.
