Charges reduced in Oglesby incident

Tom Collins
NewsTribune Senior Reporter

OTTAWA — An Oglesby man who once faced a felony charge — and a lengthy trip to prison — now is charged with simple misdemeanors.

Kadeem J. Burgess, 23, of Oglesby turned himself in Sept. 17 to Oglesby police on a La Salle County warrant charging him with home invasion, a Class X felony carrying 6-30 years in prison.

Police said at the time the charge stemmed from a Sept. 14 break-in in the 300 block of West Walnut Street during which a man allegedly entered through a window and threatened individuals with a knife.

However, prosecutors revealed Friday in open court that a subsequent investigation showed Burgess’ name was on the lease; under the law, a person cannot commit home invasion entering his or her own home.

Burgess now is charged with aggravated assault and domestic battery, both Class A misdemeanors carrying up to a year in La Salle County Jail, but no possibility of prison.
Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. reduced Burgess’ bond from $150,000 to $7,500. Burgess needs to post $750 in cash to be released from jail.
