NewsTribune health care series to begin Monday (video)

NewsTribune reporters Kevin Caufield and Tom Collins talk about an upcoming series to help readers make sense of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Also contributing to the series are Mendota bureau chief Tamara Abbey, Marshall-Putnam bureau chief Shannon Crawley-Serpette and reporter Alicia Riniker.

Political debate has rotated around sweeping changes to this nation’s health insurance industry via a new law called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
A significant component of the Affordable Care Act — health insurance exchanges — will open for enrollment Oct. 1. In the meantime, federal lawmakers and political pundits will continue to argue the merits of the controversial law.
The NewsTribune has spent the past several months creating a five-day series titled “A practical guide to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” that will appear Monday.
The series is meant to remove the emotionally-charged politics behind the law to better explain its complicated and critical concepts. Readers will have a better understanding of components such as what an insurance exchange is, how the law will affect people and businesses in the Illinois Valley and what impact it could have on health care consumers of all demographics.
Our story outline is as follows:
- Monday — The employed and unemployed; Explaining the insurance exchange
- Tuesday — Health care professionals speak out; Malpractice and choice
- Wednesday — Senior citizen impact;  Death panel?
- Thursday — Employer pinch; The “religious mandate” defined
-Friday — Happy days; To pay or not to pay
Readers may visit to watch a video about the series.
Readers also will be able to participate in an on-going Q&A discussion to ask reporters questions about the series or health care law.
