La Salle County board OKs new radio contract

Kevin Caufield
NewsTribune Reporter

La Salle County Board members Tuesday approved a $298,400 contract with Barbeck Communications Group, Inc. to complete overhaul the sheriff’s department’s existing VHF Motorola Radio System.

“This will be the best radio system coverage we’ve ever had,” Templeton said. “Owning our own system seems to be the best option for us.”

Once the system is in place, deputies will now have very few “dark zones” where handheld radios cannot receive a signal. Additionally, the new radios will allow deputies to use handheld radios to communicate with other departments.

“This offers us interoperability with other departments once deputies are outside of their squad cars,” Templeton explained. “It’s a tremendous safety factor for not only our office but other agencies.”

In other business:

n Board members authorized a $50,000 contract with Willett, Hoffman and Associates of Dixon to prepare documents for a permanent flood control measure at La Salle county Nursing Home.

n Board members agreed to raise the rates at the nursing home as follows: Private room rate from $137 per day to $140; semi-private room rate from $132 per day to $135; and expanded semi-private room rate of $138.

n Board members agreed to extend the janitorial services contract with Vicki’s Cleaning Service, Inc. for period beginning Dec. 1 to Nov. 30, 2014 at a cost of $86,400.

n Board members approved the appointments of Kevin Knect, La Salle County Emergency Telephone Board; Dan Bedker, commissioner of Brookfield-Vienna Drainage District; and Tom McNamara, trustee of Wallace Fire Protection District.

n The board honored Stanley Twait for his 56 years of serving the county in various capacities.
