TONICA — Roads were being closed after a gas main was broken during demolition work at the Village Inn in Tonica.

Mitch Urban of Ace Auto Salvage not far from the Village Inn said police were arriving at about 3:30 p.m. to block roads, and motorists were being advised to avoid Route 251 and take Interstate 39 instead.

Tonica Fire Department had people on the scene and emergency crews shut down at least one road.

"I think they finally got the gas stopped," Urban said at 3:59 p.m. He said Route 251 had just reopened, but traffic coming off Interstate 39 on Ray Richardson Road was being routed south into town on the first road to the west of Route 251 and the gas break.

Urban said the gas main leak was quite loud while it was at its worst.
