Skateboarders receive permission for a film in La Salle

Tom Collins
NewsTribune Senior Reporter

Don’t call the cops if you see an illegal skateboarder gliding down First Street in La Salle: Two filmmakers got the city’s OK to skate for independent film.

Tuesday, the La Salle City Council voted 8-0 to temporarily suspend an ordinance against sidewalk skateboarding for Vincent Fleming and Chris Varney, two filmmakers from Granville who are planning a short indie-film on the evolution of skateboarding since the 1990s.

Fleming and Varney are co-owners of Othblade Productions and plan to film a skateboarder zipping down a portion of First Street sidewalk over a two-day period starting today. They said footage would be shot in 10-minute increments over a total of six hours.

Varney said he anticipated a few gawkers, but politely requested that people steer clear of the cameras to enable him and Fleming to complete the two-day shoot.

“Hopefully, the heat keeps them away,” he laughed. “When people see cameras, they want to stop.”

The finished product will eventually appear on YouTube through the keywords of Othblade Productions.

“Thank you for going through the proper channels,” Mayor Jeff Grove said. “We appreciate that.”
