Disaster assistance available, application deadline approaches

NT Staff

OTTAWA — U.S. Small Business Administration has approved nearly $7 million in disaster assistance loans for residents and businesses in Illinois affected by the severe storms between April 16 and May 5.

Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Ottawa city building official and floodplain manager Mike Sutfin reminds all residents wishing to participate in the loan program they must apply directly to FEMA. The deadline to file an SBA Disaster Loan application is Tuesday, July 9. Registration can be completed online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling the FEMA helpline at (800) 621-3362.

To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, applicants must register directly with FEMA. Any information and damage reported by residents to the city or county at the time of the disaster was for other fact-finding purposes and was not a part of FEMA records. Those seeking a loan must still register with FEMA to be considered for disaster assistance.
