An unoccupied, uninsured house in the 2300 block of St. Vincent’s Avenue is likely a total loss after a fire Saturday evening, according to La Salle Fire Department.

La Salle firefighters were paged at 5:58 p.m. Saturday to 2314½ St. Vincent Ave. and found flames burning the rear of a two-story house. Peru and Utica firefighters assisted at the scene.

La Salle Fire Department’s Brian Zeller said firefighters entered the structure from the front and pushed the fire out the back. However, fire had traveled up walls into an attic that had been converted into living space at one point.

Firefighters had to tear into walls to get at the fire and also had to chase it into voids behind knee walls and below the roofline.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Zeller indicated he was uncertain of the ownership of the building as of 7 a.m. today.
