Food pantry needs donations in summer, too

Hall Township Food Pantry is looking for food donations during summer months.

Summer is particularly hard on families with kids out of school, said Jan Martin executive director of Project Success for Eastern Bureau County and operator of the pantry.

She said it is tough to feed everyone without the benefit of school breakfast and lunch programs.
Children are home from school, many of whom have food needs and who will also be responsible for preparing their own meals, said Martin. HTFP is seeking nutritious foods which do not require children to cook meals.

Because bread spoils so quickly, Martin suggests donating packages of flour tortillas so children can make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Saltine crackers, graham crackers and Ritz crackers are also good for meals, Martin said. Pudding cups, fruit cups, fruit, milk, unfrosted pop tarts, juice boxes, granola bars and cereals of all sorts — including oatmeal — are easy for children to prepare, she added. Lunch meats, cheese and fresh veggies also are needed.

Martin said the pantry has plenty of refrigerator and freezer space and is open 8:30-4pm daily for donation drop off. The pantry is at 500 N. Terry St., Spring Valley and can be reached by calling (815) 663-2085.
